POSITION SUMMARY This is a highly technical position that requires in-depth knowledge of medical terminology, principles/practices of aseptic technique, sterilization practices/standards, decontamination, cleaning, and sterilization of all of medical instruments/equipment within the surgical services arena in an acute care hospital. Surgical supply and sterile processing are the core of surgical services in delivering/meeting quality standards within surgical services. Knowledge of regulatory requirements in sterile processing and surgical supply as defined by Advancing Safety in Medical Technology (AAMI), (Association of Operating Nursing) AORN, Department of Health (DOH) and Centers for Medicare (CMS) and CDC Infection Control Standards are necessary. Supply chain and inventory management, case load specific knowledge of equipment, instruments, supplies and prosthetics used on all cases in OR/sterile processing, including arranging for special instruments and prosthetics with the vendors. Ability to independently pull cases for the operating room as well as order/distribute materials/supplies/equipment within the surgical services division, including anesthesia. Assists in the transfer of patients in a safe manner and OR room turnover to minimize turnover time. Scrubs in the surgical procedure and holds an extremity. Able to multitask in a high stress environment and maintain a pleasant decorum. Able to effectively use computer systems within the surgical services division.
EDUCATION, TRAINING & EXPERIENCE High school diploma or GED, Current national certification from the Certification Board for Sterile Processing and Distribution (CBSPD)or from International Association of Healthcare Central Service Materiel Management (IAHCSMM) as a Certified Registered Central Sterile Technician (CRCST) and Certified Instrument Specialist (CIS) or acquire within 1 year of hire. Maintenance required, Recent instrument and/or/surgical technology in an acute care hospital or transferable experience, BLS for healthcare. Maintenance required, 1-3 years’ experience in sterile processing and/or operating room in an acute care hospital, Current national certification (CRCST) from International Association of Healthcare Central Service Materiel Management (IAHCSMM), Current national certification as Certified Endoscope Reprocessor (CER) from CBSPD* and/or IAHCSMM*, Familiar with regulatory requirements in sterile processing and surgical supply as defined by Advancing Safety in Medical Technology (AAMI), (Association of Operating Nursing) AORN, Department of Health (DOH) and Centers for Medicare (CMS) and Infection Control Standards, as applicable.
